World's Finest # 154, December, 1965

One of the most controversial points in the entire WORLD'S FINEST run is Bob Haney's "continuity-be-damned" Super Sons series, the roots of which are planted in this Imaginary tale by Edmond Hamilton. This and its sequel were always favorites of mine. A bit unusual that they would have two Imaginary stories in a  row.

The "Best" GA story of all time? Probably not, but this ADVENTURE COMICS reprint is a good one. Odd, though, that we return yet again to Green Arrow when we're supposedly trying to establish the whole Editor's Round Table. Odd, also that we never seem to reveal who these editors re that make the choices! Why do I suspect it was Weisinger himself, randomly grabbing stories from a file cabinet.?

World's Finest # 153, November, 1965

I believe this is the first flat-out "Imaginary Story" to appear here in WF. The conceit of the concept is that the creators of the story are literally unbound from any and all continuity, even the most basic! Just for the sake of a good story, we here see Batman as Superman's arch-foe.

Note that the page below where Robin is briefly introduced only to be removed from the storyline, is also the original appearance of the nigh-ubiquitous slapping meme!

The TWILIGHT ZONE had been off the air for about a  year. Apparently no one at DC had noticed.

World's Finest # 152, September, 1965

A fun little story ruined a bit by the fact that the Part 2 splash gives away the Big Reveal before the story itself does!

The surprise story is replaced by the Editor's Round Table. Now this idea certainly had the potential for greatness but it starts off poorly with a sub-standard 1956 story purported to be the favorite of the nameless editor of TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED. Since the credited editor at that time had been Whitney Ellsworth and Ellsworth was well into his Hollywood years, we have no idea who it actually was…or who chose this story. There would be some good choices to come but for the most part, the Editors' Round Table was the worst kind of filler. Why they just didn't do a  book length Batman/Superman tale I'll never understand.
