World's Finest # 36, September/October, 1948

This was one of the first Golden Age comics I ever owned, purchased for $5.00 in the mid-seventies. Even as Golden Age comics go, though, it's a bit of a let-down. TOMAHAWK's place is taken up by DOC AND FATTY from ALL-FUNNY COMICS as well as a "true" filler.

"Doc" seems to be based on comedian Robert Woolsey, already deceased ten years by this point which means the ten year olds who were the fan base of comics would never have heard of him. A fun story, though, with art by Howard Sherman.

  1. At least you didn't tell us how awful the Superman serial the ad is telling us is actually is!!!

  2. Actually, the serial itself isn't half-bad (Carol Forman as the Spider Lady was kinda sexy in that black evening gown, Pierre Watkins made a pretty good two-fisted Perry White, and Noel Neill's Lois Lane isn't as annoying here as it would be on tv), although the flying effects really sucked.

  3. Hey, Joe! Good to see you. Haven't heard from you in a while. Hope all is well!

  4. The flying effects consisted of extremely obvious animation (like Dracula's man-to-bat transformations in "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein"). The animators wanted to add shadows, but cheap Sam Katzman said something like "hey, it's for kids, they won't know the difference."

  5. I have the 2 Superman serials on DVD, and I found Carol Forman's performance hewn from the finest card stock.
